The Wisconsin Federation of Museums, Ltd., was founded in April, 1975 by Ralph Bufano, John Kuony and Joseph Hutchinson. The first Annual Meeting of the WFM was held at Beloit College. Other early contributors included Joseph Ishikawa, Jim Quinn, and the "Federation of Art Museums in Wisconsin."

Wisconsin Federation of Museums Membership is open to all museums professionals, volunteers, and those interested in pursuing a career in museums. WFM Member Institutions often participate in regional and statewide activities, such as the annual meeting, roundtables, workshops and lectures
